A student's marks slip, or they go quiet in class, and by the time a teacher notices, weeks have passed. Most schools rely on a teacher spotting the signs, which works when the class is small and the teacher has time — and works less well as class sizes and workloads grow. A short, regular check-in, asked simply and in the student's own language, catches more, earlier.
Signs you need this
- Wellbeing conversations only happen after a problem is already visible — a fight, a sudden drop in marks, an absence pattern.
- Check-ins, where they exist, are in English forms that younger or Tamil-medium students answer half-heartedly.
- There is no simple way to see which students need attention across a whole school, only within one class.
- A student who is comfortable in Tamil is asked to describe how they feel in English, and says less than they mean to.
What a good one does
A useful check-in is short — a handful of simple questions, not a long form — asked often enough to catch a change, not so often it becomes routine and ignored. It should be in Tamil for students who think in Tamil, in plain words, not a translated version of an English questionnaire. Responses should flag a pattern to a counsellor or teacher privately, rather than being just another form that sits in a folder.
What it costs you
The real work is deciding who acts on a flagged response and how fast — a check-in tool that raises concerns nobody follows up on is worse than not asking. Keep the questions age-appropriate and reviewed by your counsellor, not generic ones borrowed from elsewhere. Student answers are sensitive; they should be visible only to the staff who need to act, not the whole staff room.
Questions to ask any vendor
- Are questions available in Tamil, written for students, not translated from an adult English form?
- Who sees a flagged response, and how quickly?
- Can your counsellor edit the questions, or are they fixed?
How we can help
Our language work, built on Sol, handles Tamil, English and Hindi the way students actually write, which is what a wellbeing check-in needs to be honest and simple. See how this fits your school alongside Valarchi at /products/valarchi, and tell us about your school at talk to us.
