What on-premise AI means, in simple words
No jargon: what changes when an AI system runs inside your own walls instead of on someone else's cloud.

"On-premise AI" sounds like a bigger deal than it is. It simply means the AI model runs on a computer inside your building or your own data centre, instead of on a server run by a company somewhere else. Your files never leave to be processed.
What actually changes
- Your documents, scans and recordings stay on hardware you control, not uploaded anywhere.
- The system can run with no internet connection at all, sometimes called "air-gapped."
- You can show an auditor exactly which questions were asked and what the system answered, because the log never left your building either.
- Updates to the model come to you, instead of your data going out to be trained on.
When it is worth the extra effort
On-premise is worth it when the files themselves cannot leave — court records, patient files, bank statements, anything under a confidentiality rule. It is also worth it when your organisation is simply not allowed to use an outside cloud service by policy, which is common in courts, hospitals and government offices. For a small business asking general questions with nothing sensitive in the file, a cloud service is usually simpler and cheaper.
What it costs you
You need a physical server — ordinary hardware, not something exotic — sitting inside your office or data centre. Someone has to install it, keep it updated, and give staff access with proper logins. This is more setup than signing up for a website, but it is a one-time job, not a recurring headache, once it is running.
Questions to ask any vendor
- Does the system need an internet connection to work at all, even occasionally?
- Where exactly does a document go when you upload it — which server, in which building?
- Can you get a full log of every question asked and every answer given?
- Who installs and updates it, and what does that cost each year?
