Adding shipping to your store

Once your orders outgrow you carrying parcels to the courier yourself, shipping needs to become part of your store, not an afterthought.

· 3 min read · For instagram and WhatsApp sellers scaling their orders

When you had ten orders a week, you packed them yourself and called a courier. At fifty orders a week, that stops working — pickups get missed, tracking numbers live in a notebook, and buyers message you asking where their parcel is. Adding proper shipping to your store is less about a fancy feature and more about removing yourself as the bottleneck.

Signs you need this

  • You are manually typing addresses into a courier app for every single order.
  • Buyers ask "where is my order" more often than they ask about a product.
  • You have started saying no to orders from cities you are not sure you can ship to reliably.

What a good setup does

  • Shows a shipping cost and an honest delivery estimate before the buyer confirms the order, not after.
  • Books a pickup automatically once an order is packed, instead of a manual call.
  • Sends the buyer a tracking link on WhatsApp, where they already are, rather than a separate app.
  • Handles returns and re-delivery attempts without you personally coordinating each one.

What it costs you

Shipping rates scale with weight, distance and how many pin codes you cover — a seller shipping only within Tamil Nadu pays differently from one shipping pan-India. The real cost, though, is in packing consistency: a store that promises a delivery estimate has to actually pack and hand over parcels on a schedule, or the promise breaks trust faster than no promise at all. Build slack into your estimate for festival weeks and monsoon delays, rather than promising a best-case number every single time and disappointing buyers during your busiest weeks, when couriers themselves are stretched thin and delays are genuinely outside your control, not something a store page promise can fix.

Questions to ask any vendor

  • Does the shipping cost show before the buyer pays, or as a surprise after?
  • Can it handle cash on delivery, which is still how many of your buyers prefer to pay?
  • What happens automatically when a pickup is missed or a delivery fails?
  • Do buyers get updates on WhatsApp, or do they need a separate tracking app?
