Most firms run Tally for their books and something else — a billing app, an online store, a factory order system — for day-to-day sales. The two rarely talk to each other, so every day someone opens Tally and re-enters what the other app already recorded: the same invoice, typed a second time, with a second chance to get a digit wrong.
Signs you need a proper link
- Someone re-types sales or purchase entries into Tally that already exist in another app.
- Your GST returns and your app's sales figures need to be reconciled by hand each month.
- Stock levels in Tally and in your billing app drift apart because one is not updated when the other is.
- Closing the books each month means chasing down entries that were never carried over.
What a good link does
Sales, purchases and payments recorded in your app should flow into Tally as proper vouchers, in the right ledger heads, without anyone retyping them. It should run on a schedule you trust — daily or even live — not a manual export-import someone has to remember to do. And it should be a genuine two-way check: if a number in Tally does not match the app, that mismatch should be visible, not buried.
What it costs you
The setup work is mapping your app's categories to the right Tally ledger heads correctly, once, with your accountant's sign-off — get this wrong and the entries will be technically there but in the wrong place, which is worse than not connected at all. After that, the daily cost should be close to zero; if your team is still checking every entry after the link is built, it has not been built well.
Questions to ask any vendor
- How does this actually talk to Tally — Tally's own data interchange, or something that could break on a Tally update?
- Will my accountant see the ledger mapping before it goes live?
- What happens if an entry fails to sync — does it fail silently, or does someone get notified?
- Can I still open Tally directly and see the same numbers, with nothing hidden from my accountant?
