Carlos Mendez

Restaurant OwnerAustin, TX
Built: MesaFresh

I was paying $1,200 a month for ordering, reservations, and loyalty software that didn't talk to each other. Now I have one system that does it all, built exactly for my restaurant.

4,500+
Monthly orders
$14,000/yr
Cost savings
+34%
Repeat customers

Carlos Mendez opened MesaFresh, a farm-to-table Mexican restaurant in East Austin, five years ago. The food was always the easy part. The technology was a nightmare.

The Problem

"I was using Toast for POS, Yelp for reservations, ChowNow for online ordering, and a punch card for loyalty," Carlos explains. "None of these systems knew about each other. If a regular customer ordered online, I had no way to connect that to their reservation history or their loyalty status."

The costs added up: Toast took a percentage of transactions, ChowNow charged $150/month plus fees, Yelp reservations had a per-cover charge, and he was paying a marketing consultant $400/month to manage email campaigns. Total tech spend: over $1,200/month for systems that created more work than they saved.

"My host would be on the phone taking a reservation while looking at three different screens. My kitchen would get online orders that conflicted with in-house seating. It was chaos during Friday dinner rush."

Building MesaFresh App

A friend who'd built a booking platform for her yoga studio introduced Carlos to Velosyti. Carlos sat down one evening after closing and described his dream system:

"I need an app where customers can see our menu, place orders for pickup or delivery, make reservations, and earn loyalty points — all in one place. On my side, I need a dashboard showing tonight's reservations, incoming orders, and a view of which customers are regulars."

The core system was generated in about three hours. Over the next two weeks, Carlos refined it during slow afternoon hours:

  • Added a seasonal menu system (MesaFresh changes its menu weekly based on local farm availability)
  • Built a kitchen display that shows orders in queue with estimated prep times
  • Created a loyalty system: earn a point per dollar, 100 points = $10 off
  • Integrated SMS notifications for order-ready and reservation reminders
  • Added a "Chef's Table" feature where loyal customers can reserve special tasting events

The Transition

Carlos ran both the old and new systems in parallel for two weeks, then cut over completely. "The staff adapted faster than I expected. The new system is just simpler — everything in one place instead of bouncing between apps."

The QR code on each table links to the menu and ordering system. Customers can order another round of drinks, request their check, or join the loyalty program without flagging down a server.

The Results

Eighteen months in, the numbers tell the story:

  • Online ordering is up 60% (customers prefer the branded experience over third-party apps)
  • Reservation no-shows dropped 40% (SMS reminders work)
  • Repeat customer rate increased 34% (loyalty program drives return visits)
  • Monthly tech spend dropped from $1,200 to about $50 (just hosting costs)

"The savings alone — about $14,000 a year — made it worthwhile," Carlos says. "But the real win is that I understand my customers now. I can see that Maria orders the mole enchiladas every Thursday, that the Johnson family reserves the patio every other Saturday, that our lunch crowd prefers the taco plate over the full entrees."

Expanding

Carlos is now building a catering management module. "We do a lot of catering for corporate events. The inquiry-to-quote-to-invoice process was all email and phone calls. I'm building a self-service catering portal where clients can browse packages, customize their order, and book directly."

He's also had three other restaurant owners ask if they can use his system. "I'm thinking about it. The bones of the app work for any restaurant — the menu structure, ordering flow, and reservation system are universal. The customization is what makes it mine. Maybe I help other restaurant owners build their own version."
